My Brand Nearly Killed My Business
What I thought was going to be a little nip and tuck to my former brand, Gingermint ended up being more of an entire face lift situation. Although the brand is changing, what I’m offering is not. I'm still as passionate as ever to write words and design websites, but the way I present what I do is different. I thought you might enjoy a little inside intel on what rebranding looks like in real life, to see how it’s so much more than choosing a clever name and colors.
Here's why things changed:
At first glance gingermint creative looked like an agency. It’s not. It's little ole me. One man band. This is not to say all solopreneurs should not create a business brand outside of their name, but having my name in there and switching the spotlight to me as the brand is smarter for the end goals of my business.
Allow me to explain... Before I was designing websites and writing copy for other entrepreneurs I was an entrepreneur. I was a health coach and aesthetician. Here's why these tidbits matter: I know what it feels like to just start out and feel like you are wearing 1,000 hats when only 3 actually fit. I know the pain and passion that comes with starting and running a business. These are the driving forces behind my services, this is also how I connect with my people.
I can write to you because I was you. I am you.
Also I still love all things wellness. I'm still a skincare junkie. I’m not ready to let my expertise and love affair with these two departments go. I still try out new recipes, dietary theories, and I’m ALWAYS on the hunt for skin care. For better or worse. I know a thing or two about these subjects and believe they are important tools to getting after a fucking fabulous life.
When you feel good and look good you do good.
However, I had a hard time blogging or Instagramming about such things because it felt like… I’m a website designer and writer why the hell am I talking about the paleo, peanut butter pumpkin pancakes I just made?!! Say that three times fast. So I didn’t. I got all in my head about it and couldn’t write a word. I’m a writer and designer, a blog and instagram are two of my greatest marketing tools and I couldn’t write a mother-lovin’ word, so creating a brand that is based on me gave me the permission to talk about all things me. Get it?
To boot… I'm a mama of two jelly beans. This is the biggest area of my life. I don’t want to leave this department off the table either simply because it doesn’t appear to fit into what a creative “agency” should look like. Especially given that the other driving force in my services is HUMAN CONNECTION. I love hearing it straight from other mamas and I want to pay it forward by sharing the human experience of raising humans. It's my hope that if we all get comfy cozy in our skin and be oh, so real. Myself included. Especially me. We will start realizing how we are so darn similar and when you understand someone on a level that you can relate to you are far less likely to build a wall. Donald, if you're reading...
Also, the more we see others rolling around in their skin like it’s a pair satin pj's, the more likely we are to feel inspired to do the same.
So long story short, I love being lit up and I really love lighting others up. In a shelled nut, I'm here to inspire.
That's the biggest motivation behind doing what I do, I love seeing people go after their dreams and feel supported while doing so. I don't mean that in some woo way. I really mean it. Selfishly the planet would be a more pleasant place if we all were loving life a little more. No? Loving life doesn't just have to come with starting your passion project. Sometimes it comes with a damn good breakfast or seeing another mama say she wants to move to Mexico. Because Inspiration is best served in small, digestable nuggets with a side of permission to do you.
Standing here as me in hopes you feel all the inspiration to do you,
